Hemlock Hill Residence: First Honor Architecture

Jury Comments:

This is a disciplined, nicely detailed transformation of the original house. It is elegant, with fair lines, and a simple choice of materials. It strength comes from its austere exterior. 

This project has exquisite detail; the architect knows how to use materials. Volumetrically it is a hybrid, producing views from the inside of the house back to the outside., establishing a relationship between inside and out and making the inside interesting. On this very narrow, small lot, the architects found a way to form protection on the sides of the house. On the inside there is a certain crispness to detailing. The house almost has a human quality to it- with the outside “aggressive” and the inside open and generous. The interior is skillfully detailed even down to the window sills: the joining of materials is done well.

This project is not a restoration, but a renovation that enters into a dialogue with the original  Neutra House. It respects Neutra’s detailing but inserts its own minimalist detailing where  appropriate. It is lovely to see work performed by an architect who revered details as Neutra  did. For a landmark project like this, the owner and architect have to have a common vision;  the new work done exemplified that relationship and takes neutral into the 21^st Centrury. A wonderful procession from pavilion to pavilion. It’s a success story of what the architect “did  not do”.

The Wood Design Awards is the only North American program to recognize, award and publicize excellence in wood architecture – publicly acknowledging the importance of architecture in our society. As a winning project, Bridge House will be profiled in the Wood & Design Building’s annual awards book, Celebrating Excellence in Wood Structures.

The AIA Housing and Custom Residential Knowledge Community established this awards program to emphasize the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit and a valuable national resource. The categories are (1) One- and Two-Family Custom Residences, (2) One- and Two-Family Production Homes, (3) Multifamily Housing, and (4) Specialized Housing.

Joeb Moore + Partners Architects LLC recieved an award in the One-family Custom Residence category.

“Set in a dramatic landscape, 300 feet above Kent falls, this house is poised carefully on its site, allowing the site to flow through the house. The jury was fascinated with the play of warm and cool texture and color. The house also responds to the seasons with carefully framed views, it also provides intricate and warm interior viewing chambers.”

As winner of a Merit Award, Spiral House will be profiled in the Wood & Design Building’s annual awards book, sponsored by the Canadian Wood Council.

The treatment here–with one piece [of the building] hovering–is dynamic. The composition of vertical wood detailing is well resolved; all the pieces come together. Very elegant wood massing.

This drawing seems to meld photography, art, computer graphics and client presentation. It is photo-realistic without pretending to be photographic. It has a positive cartoon quality and beautifully expresses indoor and outdoor spatial relationships.
